LETTERS | Residents offer strong support for Sheriff Bill King

In three recent letters to the editor, residents describe York County’s sheriff as an exceptional leader deserving of reelection on Nov. 3.

Sheriff King has the proven experience for the job

Editor:

I am writing to express my strong support for re-electing Sheriff Bill King in York County.

As a longtime resident of York County as well as a member of the York County Jail Board of Visitors, I admire Sheriff King’s leadership and commitment to both public safety and public health.

Sheriff King was essential to the creation of the York County Regional Training Center and the adjacent recovery center.  His concept of having law enforcement and first responders training in an integrated location with those providing and in treatment will save lives, money and staff resources no longer needed to transport those in crisis.

This multi-agency collaboration, as well as recent changes from contracting medical care to private companies at the jail to an inhouse model integrated with the recovery center will also save money, provide better care and more supportive transition back to the community, thus reducing recidivism.

As a member of the Board of Visitors, I witness Sheriff King’s active participation in jail operations, and appreciate the respectful atmosphere he and his staff provide for our incarcerated neighbors.  Education, faith-based, substance use disorder and other programming is not only provided, but sincerely and enthusiastically supported by Sheriff King and his staff. Positive outcomes of his leadership are a benefit to all of York County.

I hope you will join me in voting for Sheriff Bill King in November. Thank you,

Sarah Johnson, Sanford

Sheriff’s office has flourished under Bill King

Editor:

I am voting for Bill King this fall and would like to explain why.  He has been the sheriff for three terms and the sheriff’s office has flourished under his leadership.

For example, The York County Sheriff’s Office is the first county law enforcement agency to receive accreditation by the Maine Law Enforcement Accreditation program.  This shows that the Sheriff’s Office has current policies and procedures and subscribes to only the best practices in the law enforcement field. This clearly demonstrates the professionalism of the entire department.

I also learned that the York County Jail received a perfect score (100 percent) during its last state inspection.  Achieving a perfect score is very rare!  It is clear to me that the sheriff’s office is being run professionally and Sheriff King is doing an outstanding job!

It makes no sense not to keep this professional law enforcement manager, who is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the National Sheriffs Institution.  He has authored numerous law enforcement articles in professional law enforcement journals and has traveled internationally in efforts to stop Americans from being victimized by scammers.

Not reelecting Sheriff Bill King simply does not make sense.  I urge everybody to please join me and vote to reelect Sheriff Bill King this fall.

Former deputy says Sheriff King is a strong leader

Editor:

I had the distinct honor of serving as Chief Deputy under York County Sheriff Bill King. During my tenure at the Sheriff’s Office, I witnessed firsthand his exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to professional standards.

Sheriff King understands that building public trust requires complete transparency, rigorous oversight, and strict adherence to the chain of command by staff members.

He leads as a firm, direct, and compassionate administrator—balancing sincere praise for commendable service with firm accountability for misconduct.  His approach emphasizes maintaining professionalism with staff, recognizing that it strengthens accountability and supports objective leadership.

Beyond internal management, Sheriff King remains deeply committed to proactive community service. I recently had the privilege of collaborating with him to launch Senior Safety Fairs in Alfred and Kittery. These events provided local seniors with practical strategies to protect themselves from financial fraud and navigate driving risks safely as one ages.

The overwhelming success of these fairs highlights his dedicated approach to public safety. Vital community initiatives like these happen because of his vision and support for the safety and wellness for the people of York County.

Please join my family and me in re-electing Sheriff Bill King on November 3rd to keep York County safe, accountable, and strong.

Sincerely,

Tom Baran, Kittery
